Karlstein - Art and Architecture between Imperial Devotion and Christian Theology*
by Katerina Hornícková
(University of South Bohemia)
*Abstract: The virtual seminar focuses on unmasking the complex layers of meanings of the decoration of the imperial castle of Karlstein near Prague. Built by the Emperor Charles IV of Luxembourg in the second half of the 14th century, the interior and exterior decoration of the castle represents a material re-enactment of different biblical and theological concepts, revealing, among others, the Emperor's interest in moral theology and the idea of a good Christian ruler.
